Jonathan Nelson, born in Baltimore, Maryland, Nelson was raised in the church. His father was a pastor, his mother served as first lady, and his peers were musicians, all of whom took the artist to the Baltimore School for the Arts and Morgan State, where he studied choir. Nelson excelled as an executive at a software company, but almost lost everything in the dot-com collapse of 2001. It was then that he began his musical career as a writer, writing and recording with his vocal ensemble, Purpose.
Right Now PraiseNelson released his major label debut, Right Now Praise, in 2008, earning a Dove nomination for New Artist of the Year. Both his debut and 2010's Better Days were released on the Columbia Integrity label and reached Top Ten of Billboard's gospel covers, but it's the album's third album, Finish Strong (2013), which put the map.
After switching to Karen Clark-Sheard and J. Drew Sheard's Karew brand in 2013, Nelson made his commercial conquest with the top of the gospel table, Strong concluded. After a three-year gap, he fired Fearless, making his debut for the Light label associated with eOne. Still on the Light list, Nelson returned in 2018 with Declarations, an album he saw in duet with the great CeCe Winans on the song "Because You Are."
