Nascido em San Francisco, Coley cresceu no meio da música jazz e aprendeu a tocar clarinete e piano. Ele tocou teclados para a família Hawkins a partir de 1977 até que ele deixou de colaborar com James Cleveland em 1983. Mais tarde, ele trabalhou com artistas de jazz Nancy Wilson e Rodney Franklin e cantora pop Philip Bailey.
