Winans Phase 2 - We Got Next - 1999

Finding the middle ground between inspirational gospel and mainstream urban credibility, Winans Phase 2 -- the latest Winans family group, comprising the four sons of members of the Winans -- deliver a convincing crossover bid with their debut album, We Got Next. It's not a blatant grab for chart success, though; it's more a case of getting their spiritual message out by wrapping it in packaging that will hook more listeners. And the sonic packaging is top-quality, too; big names like Narada Michael Walden (whose credits include Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Aretha Franklin, Tevin Campbell), Rodney Jenkins (Jennifer Lopez, Mary J. Blige, Backstreet Boys, Brandy, Monica, Aaliyah, etc.) and Cedric Caldwell (Take 6, other Winans-related acts) handle the production chores, giving the record a high-tech, state-of-the-art urban-pop gloss. So much so, in fact, that the record's soulfulness can sometimes sound muted, but the smoothly polished surfaces do mesh well with the cool sophistication of the group's harmonies. Overall, it's a fine debut.

Jocelyn Aka Indigo - The Indi1st Project Breakthrough - 2009

Jocelyn, a resident of Washington D.C., grew up in a predominantly Christian family and began singing in church at a very young age. However, during her youth she knew what the purpose of the church was, she was trying to find her place in the larger picture of life while attending college, but as for her relationship with God, "I believed in him, but I did not believe him until I I was saved. "After Jocelyn accepted Christ in her life in 2006, she was more than happy to just sing in her choir at the Ministry of Evangelism About My Father and not follow the solo ministry of gospel music. However, the more she was writing songs that suggested faith and trust; that is, "Talk To Me" - a song about empowerment, plus Jocelyn was getting ready to write more music for God. Jocelyn was punched even harder in her soul when her father became seriously ill in early 2007, and decided to add another ministry, including the debut gospel album by Jocelyn AKA iNDIGO, The iNDI 1st Project ... Breakthrough.

Whether it's urban pop, hip-hop, neo-soul or praise and worship, Breakthrough is a winner on almost every level, thanks to Jocelyn's vocal range and lyrical integrity. Of the twelve tracks, here are some highlights for the T.U.M.S. readers for scope.
