Mary Mary - Go Get It - 2012

One of the most commercially successful contemporary gospel acts of the 2000s, Mary Mary is the sisterly duo of Erica and Tina Atkins, who grew up in Inglewood, California in a family also comprised of five other sisters and a brother. The girls' parents were gospel singers, and before long the children were singing in their local church choir, eventually turning up on the Bobby Jones Gospel show on BET. The siblings joined the Michael Matthews traveling gospel show Mama I'm Sorry in 1995, followed by a second Matthews production, Sneaky. Each sister subsequently toured as a backup singer for a variety of R&B acts.

The Prince of Egypt [Inspirational] Meanwhile, they wrote contemporary gospel material with crossover appeal. A meeting with producer Warryn Campbell (who would eventually marry Erica) led to a song publishing deal, and "Dance," a song the sisters wrote and performed with Robin S., appeared on the soundtrack to Dr. Doolittle in 1998. Later that year, "Let Go, Let God" was used on The Prince of Egypt -- Inspirational, and their songs were also recorded by 702 and Yolanda Adams. Mary Mary then signed as a recording act to Columbia/C2 Records and released the debut single "Shackles (Praise You)," a Top Ten R&B and Top 40 Hot 100 hit that was followed by the album Thankful in May 2000. Thankful was a huge success with Christian audiences, offering a younger, hipper version of gospel that audiences could relate to.

Incredible Two years later, the duo released Incredible, an album whose material was largely written by the sisters themselves. Both Erica and Tina became mothers before their self-titled album appeared in 2005. It was the duo's first album to enter the Top Ten of the Billboard 200 chart. The Sound, released in 2008, performed even better; it debuted at number seven and was Mary Mary's most crossover-savvy album yet, benefiting from Campbell's role as the set's sole producer. Two singles, "Get Up" and "God in Me," topped the Dance Music/Club Play chart, while the latter also hit number one on the Hot Gospel Songs chart. Something Big, featuring productions from Campbell and a handful of fellow collaborators, was issued in 2011. The next year, they starred in a We channel reality series, Go Get It, and released a soundtrack -- featuring old and new material -- that May.

Donnie McClurkin - We Are All One Live In Detroit - 2009

Donnie McClurkin is a gospel vocalist with the soul of Andraé Crouch and the contemporary flair of Kirk Franklin. Born into a home filled with domestic violence and drug abuse, McClurkin was saved by an aunt who sang background vocals with Crouch himself. After staying close to Crouch throughout his boyhood, he began to play piano and sing with his church youth choir. He formed the McClurkin Singers by the time he was a teenager, and later formed another group, the New York Restoration Choir.

Hired as an associate minister at Marvin Winans' Perfecting Church in 1989, with his vocals during a seminar, McClurkin endured a bout with leukemia that year. A friendship with a Warner Alliance executive resulted in his signing to the label for his 1996 self-titled LP, with producers Mark Kibble (of Take 6), Cedric and Victor Maxwell plus Andraé Crouch.

Inspired by singers like Rev. Donald Vails and Thomas Whitfield, Byron Cage began singing gospel music as a teenager. Together with his nine-vocalist group Purpose, which he formed in the mid-'90s, Cage recorded three memorable live albums of spirituals: Transparent in Your Presence, Dwell Among Us, and The Prince of Praise. 21:03 - Evolved...from Boys to Men - 2011

The boys from 21:03 learned their lesson: it pays to not mimic bygone mainstream trends too closely. Their second album, Total Attention, sees them for the most part steering clear of the B2Kisms that were all too prevalent in their debut offering, opting instead for a more personalized vibe that's in step with the new wave in urban pop, namely Chris Brown, Omarion, and Ne-Yo. 21:03 aren't as autonomous as those teen heartthrobs -- they're still under the yoke of urban gospel impresarios PAJAM -- but they're noticeably more seasoned here, singing with more conviction and assurance than when they were first put together. The PAJAM factor also means there's a fair share of name-dropping and overdone, over-tracked vocals, but outside of that the clear center of attention is the trio, which appears in control while seesawing between futuristic, buzzed-out bangers ("You," "U Got Me Through") and heartfelt balladry ("Now," "Holding on to You"). A few throwaway tracks are clearly aimed at the contemporary gospel contingent ("Riverside," "Cover Me"), but 21:03 are almost out of character on those. Since they're young, have great voices, and love to dance, they thrive on bangers like "Talkin' About" and "Brace Up," not syrupy, lighters-in-the-air altar calls like "Power of Christ." That said, Total Attention is still a testament to the threesome's growth spurt. God willing, it's only a matter of time before they're comfortable in their own skin to the extent that they're able to call the shots and assert themselves as true power players in urban gospel. For the time being, all eyes are on them.

George Huff - George Huff - 2009

One of the most likable singers on the third season of the nationally televised talent contest American Idol, George Huff was voted off halfway through the competition but returned to the public eye as a spiritual-pop singer signed to the Christian label Word. Born into poverty in New Orleans, Huff was either in school or at church in his younger years. He began singing at church when he was five and it only took a little word of mouth before he was receiving invitations to sing in neighboring churches. In later years he attended the University of Oklahoma on a full music scholarship, but by the middle of his junior year, the scholarship had been exhausted and George was running out of funds. Taking a chance in hopes of raising the money to finish school, Huff traveled to Houston when the American Idol auditions arrived in the city. He nailed the audition, competed on the show, and made it to the Top Five before being voted off. After returning from the 50-city tour that follows every season of the series, Huff considered his options. Offers from four different record companies were on the table, but he chose the contemporary Christian music label Word. The 2004 release My Christmas EP! was followed a year later by his debut full-length, Miracles. After his hometown was ravaged by Hurricane Katrina in September of 2005, Huff participated in numerous fundraising events and concerts.

Anthony Evans - Home - 2011

The son of Dr. Tony Evans -- founder and pastor of Dallas, Texas' Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship, as well as a high-profile radio and television host -- Anthony Evans started his career in Christian music in 2001, as a background singer for Kirk Franklin. After a few years with Franklin, Evans established his solo career, beginning with the 2004 album Even More, released on the INO label through Epic. A promising debut, it peaked at number 17 on Billboard's Top Gospel Albums chart. Additional albums followed for INO, Integrity, EMI Gospel, and Fair Trade. Evans broadened his reach in early 2012, when he competed on The Voice during the talent competition's second season. While he didn't make it past the sixth episode, his performances of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" and Alicia Keys' "If I Ain't Got You" introduced him to a new audience and opened doors to secular music. He also continued to work on The Voice as an audition producer. His sixth proper studio album, Real Life/Real Worship, followed in April 2014 and was his most successful release. Produced entirely by Max Stark, the music was stylistically broad, while the lyrics remained connected to those of Evans' previous releases. It incorporated Evans' CCM and contemporary gospel flavors, as well as straightforward rock and EDM-laced dance-pop. It debuted at number 60 on the Billboard 200.

Beckah Shae - Scripture Snacks, Vol. 2 - 2012

Beckah Shae bridges the pop, contemporary Christian, and praise & worship genres in her recorded work, adding positive, uplifting, and spiritual lyrics to 21st century commercial pop rhythms, beats, and arrangements. After her parents divorced when she was an infant, her mother endured several abusive marriages, setting in motion for Shae a young-adult life of depression, eating disorders, low self-esteem, and frequent moves which found her staying in cars, hotels, women’s shelters, and foster homes. Shae struggled, but always stuck with her passion for singing, and shortly after she graduated from high school, she was spotted by a talent scout. Soon, Shae found herself recording a song demo in Los Angeles and the future looked bright, but in the end, nothing came of it. In her early twenties, Shae also spent time living in Las Vegas before moving to Nashville.

Butterfly There she met Jack “Shoc” Shocklee, a rising young producer who had done work with several Christian artists, including Lil’ iRocc Williams, Group 1 Crew, and tobyMac. The pair soon began working on Shae's music and songwriting. The work partnership deepened, and the pair married in August of 2004.

Dorinda Clark Cole - I Survived - 2011

Born Dorinda Grace Clark in 1957, the singer first took to the church stage when she was five and, like sisters Jacky Clark-Chisholm, Elbertina "Twinkie" Clark, and Karen Clark-Sheard, she learned the tools of the music trade under the tutelage of her mother, church music matriarch Mattie Moss Clark. A stern, demanding instructor, Moss Clark had high expectations for her daughters, going beyond the typical "raised singing in the choir" approach of other black vocalists. In time, all the Sunday specials, tough rehearsal schedules, and late-night practice sessions Moss Clark imposed on her offspring paid off, serving as a springboard for the launch of the Clark Sisters as a bona fide quartet sensation in the early '70s.
